1st violin recital

June 20, 2012 By morgan

Miss Ariel held a violin recital on April 14th for her Suzuki students. It was tons of fun and great to see Milo’s reaction when the “big” kids played. They were pretty incredible and inspiring for both of us. Milo rocked out a “Twinkle Variation A” (“Mississippi Hot Dog” bow rhythm). And then his entire class played an ensemble “Monkey Song”.

Bye Bye Do, hello Re

April 28, 2012 By morgan

Milo is growing like a weed and just outgrew his first violin. We named the first one, “Do” and the new one has been dubbed “Re”.

Bye Bye Do, hello Re!!

It’s sad saying goodbye to Do, because of how souped up and customized he had become. Milo’s wonderful teacher Miss Ariel had this 1st violin and bow “modded” with finger tapes, elastic band “finger seat-belts”, and multiple stickers in various spots to help us keep track of where all of our fingers need to be at various times.

But Re already has brand new finger tapes and I’m sure before long will be just as loved.

A quiet Sunday evening with the Beastie Boys

How do you like to wind down after a long week?

A quiet Sunday evening

A quiet Sunday evening part 2

I’m seeing a kind of Mick Jagger meets “Smells like teen spirit” sensibility in the dancing style…

Video Response: Caya’s Song

August 25, 2011 By morgan

Catherine writes:

So I showed Caya the roller skate song and she loved it and wanted me to send a video of her singing for Milo…note the improvised guitar. At the end she also talks about wanting to send something in the mail to milo …

I think this means that we’re officially taking submissions – so send in your videos of future rock stars people! (btw, did you know that Milo is a Future Stuntman?)

Slow Down

August 18, 2011 By morgan

This is an older one from last December, but remains a pretty popular bedtime song choice. We have lots of versions with customized lyrics, but this one is pretty much straight up “59th Street Bridge Song”:

Brand New Key

August 18, 2011 By morgan

Milo singing part of “Brand New Key” by Melanie Safka. A student of mine made an animation to this song as her final project and Milo saw me grading it…and now we sing it all the time.

And the original…

Fire Trucks Going Faster

June 1, 2011 By morgan

In the spirit of short, stripped-down punk rock songs, Milo and I penned this little number. Included in this post are the lyrics, if you want to try it out at home, and 2 video versions to give you a sense of the possibilities. It’s meant to be sung fast and loud! One note about Milo’s performance: what at first may seem like an homage to Jim Morrison (singing with his back to the crowd) is actually just him playing a pretend keyboard.
